Biography

Ciarán Hinds was born in Belfast, Ireland on February 9, 1953. He was the youngest of five children and the only son. His father was a doctor who hoped to have Ciarán follow in his footsteps, but that was not to be. It was his mother Moya, an amateur actress, who was the real influence behind his decision to be come an actor.
Though he did begin Law school at Queen University, he left that in order train in acting at RADA. He began his stage career at the Glasgow Citizens' Theater as the rear end of a horse in the production of Cinderella. Staying with the company for several years, he starred in a number of productions, including playing the lead roles in Arsenic and Old Lace and Faust. His stage career has included working with The Field Day Company and a number of world tours. He has starred in a number of productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company, including a world tour in the title role of Richard III.
Hinds' film career began in 1981 in the movie, Excalibur which boasted a cast rich in talented actors including Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne, and Patrick Stewart. In-between his movie work, he's amassed a large number of television credits. Playing such classic characters as Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre, and Captain Wentworth in Persuasion has increased his popularity and most definitely given him much increased recognition.
Ciarán is in a long-term relationship with a French-Vietnamese actress named Hélène Patarot (together since 1987) and they have a daughter, Aoife.

2004: Ciarán won Best Actor in a Dramatic Series, at the Irish Film and Television Awards in 2004 for The Mayor of Casterbridge.
2004: Ciarán won the Audie Award for best audio drama performance for his work on The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare.
1999: Ciarán won the Outer Critic Circle Award, Special Achievement, for best ensemble cast performance, for Closer.
1999: Ciarán won the Theatre World Award for best debut in NYC for Closer.
Ciarán danced with the Patricia Mulholland Irish Ballet.
Ciarán professes himself slightly underwhelmed with the whole notion of his Broadway debut in Closer, but he's quick to point out that it's not a reaction born of snobbery, rather that Broadway is something that just never meant that much to him in the way of ambitions and dreams. He has jokingly stated that he feels the same about Hollywood but would certainly head out west ("for the shekels") if the right opportunity came along.
Ciarán Hinds (At 12, as a skinny grammar school boy, Ciarán apparently made a terrific "Lady Macbeth."): My mum says I haven't done anything as good, so it's an on-going battle trying to hit that high again.
